If you dont already, what you should be doing is COMBINING these two benchmarks to see if you are getting VALUE and hence making a profit.

The only way you will make a profit from betting over the long term is if you consistently back horses at prices HIGHER than their actual chance of winning. In other words, when you get a VALUE price.

Equally, you will make money if you consistently lay bets on horses to lose at prices too LOW when compared to their actual chance of winning. This is how bookmakers have made their money for generations.

For example, if you consistently back horses with a 50% chance of winning, but always back at odds better than evens, you will make a profit. If you back 5/1 (chance) horses at prices of 6/1 then you will make a profit over time.

Its obvious really, but too many times people get carried away with strike rates, and "never backing odds-on", when both these benchmarks are irrelevant if price does not also come into the equation.

A strike rate of 50% might seem impressive, but if it is achieved with horses at prices less than evens, you will lose money.

If a tipsters average winning price was 4/5 odds-on, it might on the face of it seem like his tips were very poor value that anyone could pick. But if you learned he had a strike rate of 70% then its a different story. He is getting an average price of 4/5 about horses which should be priced at just 3/7 odds-on.

Prices and strike rates are all relative, and intrinsically linked with VALUE

Common misconceptions are that you cannot make money by backing short-priced horses, or that you only make money by selecting horses at higher prices. Both these theories have an element of truth, but need qualifying further for them to be totally true.

Myth #1 : Short-price horses are always poor value
The horse with the shortest price in a race is the favourite, and we all know that if we blindly backed the favourite in every race we would lose money this is a fact. But the reason we would lose money is because the prices are manipulated by the bookmakers, such that the price of a horse is generally too short compared to its actual chance of winning.

For example, you would expect a horse priced at Even money to win 50% of the time WRONG!! in fact even money chances win only around 44% of the time. This is how bookmakers make their profit.

Let me show you how: The even money horse runs 100 races, and we as punters place our bets each time at even money. We will collect from the bookmaker only 44 times, but 56 times the bookmaker will keep our money.

But short-priced horses can still make you a profit if the price is still too high compared to the chance of the horse winning. For example, a horse at even money is great value if it actually has a 60% chance of winning. You would be getting even money about a horse that should be priced at 4/6

Myth #2 : You can only make a profit by backing higher-priced horses
Of all the horses in a race, the favourite with the shortest price will win the most often fact. So how can we make money by backing horses further down the market, with better prices. Well, the same theory applies as above only back horses at a price higher than their actual chance of winning.

If you decide to only back horses at 10/1 but your system produces a strike rate of 8% then you will lose money. If, however, your strike rate is 12% then you will make a profit.

This is because you are backing horses at 10/1 (11.0) when their actual chance of winning is 12% and represented by a price of 8.33. You are getting a price of 11.0 for something that is actually only worth 8.33 that is why you will profit.

Hopefully you can see that the key to making the profit here, is NOT the 10/1 price alone, nor the 12% strike rate, but getting the two together and achieving VALUE

Higher prices that still do not represent value, will still lead to a loss.

Let me give you an example of how by simply getting a better price about your selections can make the difference between winning and losing money:-

Example One:

What is the difference between the two sets of results above? The same horses ran in the same races, with the same results. Both sets of results have a strike rate of 30%

The difference is in the prices. Each price has been increased by just one notch.

Lets examine the difference this makes on our return:
In Example One we invest 10 x 100 = 1,000
Our return is 287 + 300 + 375 = 962 so we lose 38

In Example Two we invest the same amount of 1,000
However, our return is now 300 + 325 + 400 = 1,025 so we make a profit of 25
Mathematically, why did we lose money with Example One, yet make a profit with Example Two?

This is why:
In both cases we achieved a strike rate of 30% -- we scored 3 times from 10 attempts -- so our horses had a 30% chance of winning. A 30% chance is represented by a price of 3.33

In Example One the average winning price was the average of 15/8 (2.87), 2/1 (3.00) and 11/4 (3.75) which is 3.21

You can see, we were getting an average price of just 3.21 about horses which should have been priced at 3.33 the price was too low compared to the actual chance of winning, and that is why we lost money over a series of bets.

In Example Two the average winning price was the average of 2/1 (3.00), 9/4 (3.25) and 3/1 (4.00) which is 3.42

You can see, we were getting an average price of 3.42 about horses which should have been priced at 3.33 the price was higher when compared to the actual chance of winning, and that is why we made a profit over a series of bets.

How do you get extra value when placing bets?
1) Know what price you want. You wouldnt go into Tescos and ask for a tin of beans, at whatever price the store wanted to charge.

2) If you cannot get the price you want, then do not bet. If you can learn to accept the disappointment of missing the occasional short-priced winner, than you will never have to suffer the pain of a short-priced loser.

3) Bet on the exchanges. Prices on the exchanges are typically 20% higher than those offered by high street bookmakers. Check out sites such as Betfair, Betdaq, and WBX World Bet Exchange.

4) Post and forget your bets on the exchanges. No more sitting in front of your PC waiting for a price. Post your request for the price YOU want on a betting exchange, and you can walk away knowing that if your price is matched you have gotten a value bet if it isnt matched your bet will be cancelled and your money returned. You are in control of the price, not the bookmaker.

In Summary
The key lesson I want people to learn from this article is to gain the discipline of seeking value in any bets they place. If you find no value, then keep your money safe and watch the race. If you can learn to risk your money only when you have the prospect of a satisfactory return, then you will elevate yourself from 98% of punters who continue to lose money.

Smoke & Heat Detectors- Smoke detectors are available that will interface with your security system. The smoke detectors that are already in your home cant be tied into your security system. The device that the builder put in your home is either electrical, battery operated, or in some instances both, if you have the better quality detectors. Lifesaving smoke detectors should be in every home. If you elect to add some to your system, your existing detectors should be left in place, as they are still able to help give early warning in case of a fire.

If you add a smoke detector to your system it should be placed in the highest point of your home as possible, as smoke will rise no matter where it originates. Some homeowners elect to place one in the basement and top floor, and some want one added to every floor.

The technology that makes most of these devices work is photoelectric technology. This means that the detector basically takes a snapshot of the density of smoke that enters its chamber, and wants to see a density increase as it samples every few milliseconds. This technology makes the detector much more discriminating then its inexpensive counterparts.

Many of these devices also detect temperature change with their built in heat detectors. This means that the device will go into an alarm condition, if the temperature in its area of coverage is rising rapidly, even if there is no smoke yet. Independent heat detectors are also available, if you would like an added degree of protection in areas such as kitchens, furnace rooms, attics and fireplaces. There are many advantages to adding fire devices to your security system. Some of them are:

* Your detector is on all the time, even if your alarm is disarmed.

* The devices work off the power from your alarm system and use its backup power supplies should power fail.

* The siren will emit a tone that is audibly different then a burglary siren, so that you can differentiate.

* Your dispatch is being made without you having to call for help yourself. This gives you more time to gather your loved ones and pets for immediate exit.

* A dispatch will take place even if you are not home. Typically flames will be coming through your roof, by the time your neighbors see them, and call for help. This early response may save your pets and a good portion of your home.

* Insurance companies often give an additional discount, off your homeowners insurance, for having a fire system. These devices could effectively pay for themselves, after a few years.

(INSIDE SCOOP!) Some municipalities will not dispatch their limited resources to an automatic fire alarm, unless it is designed completely to local code. This is a very expensive endeavor that, many homeowners in those areas cant justify. Businesses will have to do this, in order to get an occupancy permit. Check with your local fire authority before investing in smoke or heat detectors that will not get a response.

Exercise and a healthy, nutritious diet should be on everyone's daily routine, which can serve as the first line of defense against several ailments. But many patients wake up to the perils of obesity fairly late when their excessive weight has led them to a series of complaints including diabetes and coronary disorders. They get easily dispirited, especially when faced with the rigors of the demanding exercise and diet regimens that won't give them the fast results they desire, and turn in for gastric bypass surgery.

But is gastric bypass surgery the magic bullet that can provide permanent freedom from the extra pounds?

The bypass surgery, or for that matter any bariatric surgery, is not a quick-fix. As the surgery carries its own risk, the surgery is not for all, but only for those morbidly obese persons whose BMI has crossed 40 and who cannot achieve significant weight through diet and exercise alone. It can be successful only for those who are disciplined and committed to the prescribed diet. People who suffer from depression, bipolar disease, or schizophrenia should consult and be under the care of a psychiatrist before gastric bypass, as weight loss can worsen these conditions.

How the gastric bypass surgery works is simple. The stomach is cut high up so that it is divided into two parts - a small upper part, a one 1 oz pouch, and a large lower part a 39 oz bypassed part. Three rows of staples secure the two pieces so that most of the time they don't leak. The pouch is then connected to the small intestines bypassing duodenum and part of the intestines (jejunum). The larger lower part of the stomach is just left lying idle. So you end up with a small stomach and a shorter intestines. This means that you will feel full more quickly and that you will absorb less of the food actually eaten (because of the shorter bowel). Food flows directly into the middle section of your small intestine, limiting absorption of calories.

You can begin regular activity within 4 to 6 weeks after your gastric bypass. You should be pain-free after 10 days or so. Fatigue is common, and can last from 3 to 4 weeks after your gastric bypass. The surgery alters your digestive system to make it impossible for you to eat much food at one sitting without suffering unpleasant side effects such as 'dumping syndrome' or rapid gastric emptying, which occurs when the undigested contents of your stomach are "dumped" into your small intestine too rapidly. Common symptoms include abdominal cramps and nausea .This digestive side effect acts as a brake on calorie intake, and can lead to significant loss of weight within 2 years after surgery.

Almost every gastric bypass patient suffers hair loss and hair thinning during the first six months. Once your weight stabilizes and you consume more protein, the hair will grow back. Hair treatments and permanents should be avoided.

Gastric bypass is a success when half of extra weight is lost and the loss is persistent for up to five years. The risk of mortality with a gastric bypass is about 1 in 100. Though the surgery is generally safe, it can lead to serious and potentially fatal complications. In a gastric bypass, the stitches and staples that help to bypass lower part of the stomach and reconnect to the intestines have the potential to tear in the first few weeks after surgery. This can lead to peritonitis and acid leak and bleeding. Intestinal blockage, due to scar tissue or intestinal twisting, is a possibility. The pouch may get stretched, with the result appetite may return and result in some patients' regaining 10 to 30 pounds of lost weight.

Since the operation causes food to bypass areas of the small intestine that are responsible for absorbing protein, calcium, and certain vitamins, nutritional deficiencies may occur. In addition, less iron is absorbed because of the small size of the new stomach pouch. So you will need to take daily vitamin and mineral supplements everyday for the rest of your life, including a multivitamin, calcium, vitamin B12, and iron. You will also need to increase the proportion of protein in your diet, since you'll be eating less food overall. Blood tests must be performed every three months for the first year to check your nutritional status.

Revision surgery is required in about 10 to 20 percent of patients, usually to correct abdominal hernias or pouch stretching and narrowing. Though technically reversing the surgery is possible, it is advised only under exceptional circumstances. The complications of gastric bypass surgery must be carefully weighed in consultation with the doctors before making the decision to undergo surgery.

Once the decision has been made, simultaneously build up the determination to follow the doctor's recommendation regarding diet and exercise. Yes, you can shed the extra pounds. And the low self image.

Conquer your learning curve faster when you learn to surf.

Does good surfing instruction make a difference to your learning curve when learning to surf? You bloody bet it does!

Most of the older guys you see in the water these days did not have the benefit of surf schools when they where learning. The only surf school they attended was the school of hard knocks, heavy wipe outs, and plenty of peer pressure.

It took me years to learn what good surfing instruction from an experienced coach can teach you in hours today. The only surfing instruction available to us was watching other guys in the water, copying what they where doing, and hanging on for grim death if it all came unstuck, which it usually did.

If you want to learn to surf, and to skip the trial and error. I suggest you find a good surf school and take classes with an experienced instructor.

Tips for finding a good surf school.

1. Look for schools with accredited coaches. In most countries, surfing instructors are required to be accredited coaches through the governing body for that country.

2. Check out how the school operates. A good operator is a good sign they take the business of surfing instruction seriously.

3. Check out the schools gear. Surfing gear such as wetsuits and surfboards that are in good shape and well maintained is another great sign that they are serious about their business.

4. Ask people who have had lessons with the school. Did it work for them?

5. Have a chat with the instructors and go with your gut feel.

If you can get onto a good school your surfing will come on in leaps and bounds. Good surfing instruction really does make a world of difference.
