Networking: How to Network Within Your Organisation

Although there are any number of different networking groups and events you can attend, some of the best networking can occur within your organisation. To build your profile and reputation internally and understand whos who in the zoo it is worth investing time to get to know the people around you. Here are some suggestions of activities you could try to boost your internal networking skills.

Volunteer for the social committee. Every business (large or small) has a social committee (sometimes is it informal) designed to create fun activities to get to know co-workers. Invest some of your time to help the team create some fun and energy in your workplace. Organise a variety of events some costing money, others that are free, some that include family members or partners and some that involved outside activity i.e. company picnic you can all meet in a park, take your own food, provide sports equipment and plan to have fun. This activity also allows others to meet your extended family and help learn more about you. If you want to keep it strictly to those you work with, organise an event where you can meet people during the week and participate in an activity i.e. ten pin bowling or the movies. By choosing a week night it means people are not giving up their weekend. At Christmas hold an event to help a charity by collecting gifts or tinned food to donate to the needy.

Arrange a Lunchtime self-development session. Determine a topic you and your colleagues would be interested in, then simply invite someone into your organisation to give a brief presentation allowing time for questions and answers. You dont need to pay this person; they may be an internal expert you invite. Choose someone who is an expert in his or her topic area. When organising the meeting, set up the agenda so that there is time when people arrive to meet each other, allow 20 minutes for the presentation, 10 minutes for questions and a few minutes at the end to continue chatting to co-workers.

Start Friday night drinks after work. Suggest your team finish at 5.00 on Friday afternoon and all meet at a local bar or caf. Invite other teams that you work with to join you. Meet from 5.00 6.00 PM so it isnt a late night and still allows people to meet other Friday evening commitments. Pick a central location close to the office and make it a regular event. After a month it will gain momentum and people will know you are there and will join you when they leave the office.

Organise a lunchtime sports team. This is a great way to build teamwork internally and also get to know people from other areas within the organisation. Put up a notice or send an email asking for interested parties and then form a team i.e. basketball, football, tennis, soccer team are all fun and easy to organise. Find an oval, park or gym close to the office you can use and set a regular time and day each week to meet. This is a great way to also get fresh air and exercise while networking. You might even like to get everyone to contribute some funds and organise team t-shirts to wear, your organisation may even have some you can use!

Hold a quarterly breakfast forum and invite the CEO. Make an appointment with your CEOs Personal Assistant and advise them you would like to invite the CEO to a quarterly breakfast where they can meet the team and also answer questions they might have. Once you get approval from the PA, book the next quarters date and find a suitable venue (preferably close to the office). Each person pays for their own breakfast so it doesnt cost the company any money. Make arrangements with a caf close to the office or in-house catering if you have it, and start at 7.30 and finish by 8.45. This allows people to meet, ask the CEO questions and get involved in discussions.

Seek out (or start) a mentor program. Identify people you would like to learn from within the organisation and approach them about being mentored for 6 months. If your organisation already has a mentoring program, sign up and get involved.

Write for the company newsletter. Offer to provide articles or updates for the internal newsletter. This is a great way to work with the production team (who are often volunteers looking for content for the newsletter).

Get involved in a charity. Select a deserving charity and organise events within the company to raise money for them. Your company may already have a chosen charity, if so; invite someone from the organisation to update your colleagues on suggestions of how you can help even more. This can be a fun way to help others and also help you get to know those you work with. Make it an annual event if it is something special i.e. red nose day or Daffodil day.

Hold a brown bag seminar at lunchtime. Invite everyone to bring his or her own lunch; you can invite a speaker to provide information to the team. The topics might be relevant to them for outside life i.e. health, fitness, family or some way to add value to the people you work with. The topics can come from our colleagues ask them for suggestions. You can hold these on a monthly basis and allow time within the agenda to meet at least two other people from other departments. Advertise it on the notice boards, email and in the bathrooms (you would be surprised how many people read information in the bathrooms).

Organise cross-function team events. Get to know other teams within the business by holding a morning tea and asking the other team to explain what they do within the business and the challenges they face, and then you do the same. This is a great way to find about others and also share what you are working on.

Start a book club. Find a few people who are interested in similar books to you, set yourself a book to read every two months. If it is an Australian author, invite them to join you at one of your meetings to explain more about the book and why it was written. Most authors love to meet their readers. When you get together, chat about what you learnt from the book, what your opinions are on the writing style and what you liked most about the book.

Get in a project team. Seek opportunities to work on projects within your team and with other departments. Ensure you have your managers permission to be involved. This is a great way to network and learn from others.

Offer to be the MC. If you have a conference or event, offer your services to be the master (or mistress) of ceremonies. This will help you meet other people within the organisation, external experts that might be invited as part of the event and also help profile your skills.

Provide your business card to co-workers. When you meet someone from another department always offer your card. This will give them your contact information if they want to contact you again.

Make the most of getting to know those you work with, take time to learn what they do and how you can work together to achieve your goals.

Fax to Email - The Smart Way to Receive Faxes

In these days of email, voicemail and text messages, its amazing that the humble fax is still an integral and important part of the way many businesses operate. Indeed, the very nature of some businesses necessitates receiving a great many faxes that must be delivered to the correct recipient and promptly actioned before being accurately filed.

Many businesses that are obliged to use faxes are doing so because they are receiving legal documents, which by their very nature usually run to dozens of pages. Often only a few pages of a long document actually need printing. Regardless, the fax machine prints out all these documents in full.

If your business is one of those that rely heavily on fax, you will probably be all too aware of other shortcomings too:

They are expensive to receive, someone has to deliver them from a central machine to individual recipients, it's all too easy to overlook an important one that gets trapped unnoticed between others or to deliver them to the wrong person, they must be filed and take up expensive storage space.

With their insatiable appetite for ink and paper as well as maintenance costs, fax machines can be very expensive to run. And nothing irritates more than the unsolicited junk fax that still incurs the cost of ink and paper even though it's destined to be immediately filed in the bin.

But what if it wasnt necessary to print out every fax in full saving ink and paper? What if they could be stored on computer rather than in physical filing cabinets saving valuable storage space? What if there was another more efficient way to receive and handle faxes? Well the good news is that there is and it may not even cost you anything.

Now that most people have an Internet connected PC on their desk it makes sense to have faxes delivered electronically to their desktop. This can be easily achieved by using a fax to email service that employs a virtual phone number to receive faxes that are then sent to your preferred email address as an email attachment. And as many email to fax services are available either free or for a small monthly subscription, theyll soon start saving you money too.

A fax to email service is far more flexible too as you can receive your faxes wherever you have Internet access to your email. Each fax can be printed or not as the situation demands and can be filed on your PC. You can even leave them on the email server. Not having to store hard copy faxes saves expensive office space that can be better utilized for another purpose.

And there are other advantages. For instance, most fax to email services will ensure your virtual fax number is never engaged and are set to enable receipt of multiple faxes simultaneously. As there is no need for fax recipients to visit a central fax machine, faxes won't be accidentally discarded or inadvertently picked up by the wrong person. In fact, keeping faxes confidential is easy when you give every employee their own fax number. Remember, the recipient email address can be set to send emails to more than one address. So a fax can be sent to an individual as well as a central company fax folder.

If your business is obliged to receive faxes a fax to email solution is well worth investigating especially when so many services are available free of charge.

Author Michael Soliatis writes about telecom issues and offers a free virtual fax to email service and a free virtual voicemail to email service.

How To Recruit and Build An Explosive Network Marketing Organization

For many people the subject of recruiting is the deathblow to their network marketing dreams.

Does it have to be this way? Why do so many people join multi-level marketing organizations, only to dropout in disgust within the month? There is no denying this fact: Recruiting can be tough.

The toughest thing about recruiting is not approaching people and discussing the opportunity-- your enthusiasm for the business will see you through any hesitancy in this area. And lack of interest and outright refusal on the part of your prospects to recruit can demoralize you.

But the most devastating thing to network marketing careers is disappointment and discouragement. Disappointment and discouragement can eat through your excitement for this business like rust through the hull of an aircraft carrier--and thats what sinks the bulk of us. Not rust, discouragement.

How do you keep from becoming discouraged? Its easy for people to say, keep your chin up, or keep trying, a positive attitude will see you through. But verbal encouragement can only get you so far.

Recruiting should be approached in a particular frame of mind, and that is: Not everybody will be interested, but somewhere out there are six people I can lead to joining my organization. All I have to do is find them.

The art of finding those six people brings to mind the oyster parable. In the Persian Gulf pearl divers drop forty to sixty feet, without scuba equipment, to reach the oyster beds. During the day, they may dive numerous times, retrieving hundreds of oysters. Later, on the decks of their dhow, they will open the oyster shells in search of pearls. Sadly, less than one out of a hundred of the oysters contain a pearl. Yet, the pearl diving industry has thrived for thousands of years.

Your business is the same as the pearl divers. Your prospect pool is the oyster bed you must search through to find the pearl. Dont despair, this is the real world, and it is not going to change to suit your individual needs. Adapt to it. Accept the fact that not every person you meet will be excited about the opportunity, nor will they willingly submit to being trained or taught to think differently.

As Aristophanes wisely stated years ago, you cannot teach a crab to walk straight. Fortunately, you dont need everybody. You only need to find a handful of pearls, to be on your way. Success is just one more dive to the oyster beds away.

Newbie Trap: Reluctance to recruit. Recruiting is tough, but failure is tougher.

Heres a fact that will not make you happy: Most of your recruits will quit before ever getting to first base. Period. Now all you can do is accept that fact and then take some calculated action to help decrease the percentage of people from your organization who quit.

What good does it do you to recruit ten people, and then have them all quit within the month? Think about it. Wouldnt it be better to recruit just one person during that same month and spend a little extra time helping that person develop? Everybody has their own opinion on this matter, but if you want to increase your chances of hanging on to the people you recruit, consider some of the following techniques:

a. Support Your People

Once you inspire a prospect to join your organization, you need to support him until he gains his network marketing legs. A new prospect needs to be encouraged, even baby-sat to a certain degree. Most importantly, a new associate needs to be appreciated. Let her know that she is a part of the team, and that her individual development and success is both wanted and critical to the success of the organization. Reward her frequently with t-shirts or other inexpensive gifts for achieving predetermined levels of growth and sales volume, and of course, help her establish new goals and action plans.

b. Train your People

Have you ever walked into a new job and not been given the benefit of a trainer? What does it feel like when a boss tells you to get the job done, but doesnt offer to tell you how to do it? Thats how the new recruit feels when you sign him or her up and say, go to it, buddy. You can do it. This is not enough. If you intend to retain this person in your organization you must sit down immediately and brief him or her to discuss the following:
Developing a prospect pool
Using the product
Making a sales presentation
Presenting the plan
Basic company does and donts
Your expectations and hopes for him
What you think he should do within the next 24 hours
When you want to meet again

c. Challenge Your People

Yes, even a new recruit needs a challenge. As a part of your initial training briefing you should ask him to discuss his goals and aspirations. Help him translate these dreams into concrete action plans, then challenge him to take a step today, towards meeting that goal.

d. Set a Good Example for Your People

As the sponsor of a new recruit, you are the person that recruit will look to for guidance. In network marketing, you are not a supervisor, you are a mentor, and as a mentor every word you utter, and ever act you commit, will be observed and evaluated. Be careful what you do and how you act, because your organization will develop into a mirror image of your personality.

At a very basic level, always appear clean and neat, attend opportunity meetings regularly, conduct training seminars in your home (and encourage your direct downline to do the same with their downline), use the product, and always keep your meetings free of foul language and alcohol.

To succeed in network marketing you need to grow and retain the people you recruit. As discussed above, people will not stick around if they cannot see an opportunity for their personal reward. This may come as a shock to some, but people worth recruiting do not join multi-level marketing companies for you, they join them for themselves. And if you cant show them, or they cant understand how to duplicate the techniques and successes you enjoy, then they will not stick around.

The secret to retention is keeping your presentation of the opportunity and every step in the business building process, as simple as possible. Always remember that whatever you are doing, your downline is asking themselves: Is this something I can do? If your methods are simplicity itself, they may stick around long enough to duplicate your successes. If they perceive your methodology as too complex, then they will become intimidated and quit within the month.

Simplify everything you do. In your training sessions, break the business into bite size chunks: recruiting, sales, recruiting, sales, recruiting. Break each of these chunks into smaller morsels. For recruiting: make prospect list, drop off video to prospect, return two days later and invite to meeting. If they havent watched the video, pick it up anyway and move to the next prospect. For sales: use the product, demonstrate the product, hand out catalogs, and ask for orders.

Break the business into manageable pieces so people can comprehend the entire process. The simpler you make it, the easier it will be for the new members of your downline to take decisive action to build their own business.

In short, keep it simple.

Would you believe that success in network marketing can be obtained by using a cookie cutter? Unfortunately, this is not the little aluminum device stored in the bottom drawer of your kitchen cabinet. But, the concept is the same.

A cookie cutter is a device that allows you to quickly stamp out exact replicas of intricate designs and patterns in your cookie dough. As a businessperson, you can use cookie cutters to reproduce small successes. For example, a successful home opportunity meeting usually has an agenda similar to the one below:
Reception.
Present the opportunity.
Ask your prospects to join.
Collect referrals and new customers from prospects who turn down the opportunity.
Dismiss within 90minutes of start time.

If this method of presentation works for you, why change it? Do the same thing over and over. If you or your mentor greet prospects in a certain way that seems to consistently work, would you change it? No. Repeat the exact same process over and over.

If your technique is not working, would you change it? Certainly. Any method that proves unacceptable or offers poor results needs to be tossed out like a broken cookie cutter. You cant afford to repeat mistakes. Adjust your cookie cutter methodology and try again.

How to Avoid Getting Ripped-Off Online

Online security is one of the top catch phrases these days, but hardly anybody knows what it means and worse, most home computer users think security only applies to corporations and online businesses.

Most people think online security means simply protecting your credit card data from fraud and theft, but it actually goes way beyond that.

The potential for mayhem and just plain disruption of your life doesn't just mean credit card fraud - it can mean having your identity stolen, your life disrupted and spending hours cleaning up after an online 'vandalism' attack.

You must protect yourself from everyone from the teenage computer hacker to the organized crime syndicate using computer worms and keystroke logging viruses.

The great news is that a number of simple techniques should protect you against the vast majority of threats, since the evil doers will simply move on to easier pastures.

Update your anti-virus files

The widespread 'Bad Trans' worm logged keystrokes and transmitted potentially sensitive data such as credit card and social security numbers to the 'bad guys'.

Though this virus contained a high level of criminal intent, it was easily blocked by anyone with up-to-date anti-virus files.

If you don't have anti-virus software with current virus definitions installed, you leave the door wide open for security problems.

Install a 'Firewall'

A firewall helps prevent unauthorized access to your computer by 'hackers'.

It closes off the entry points (called open 'ports') carried by virtually every computer connected to the Internet.

A common misconception is that firewalls are only for people with cable or other high-speed connections.

Even if you use a dial up connection to get online, a firewall can help you detect and prevent people from logging on to your computer, stealing files or even using your computer to break into others!

You can take a free test of your computer's security by logging on to http://www.symantec.com/securitycheck/ and clicking 'Find out today if you are safe'. The results may surprise you.

Use secure sites

Only give sensitive data such as credit cards, social security numbers and important passwords over a secure connection.

This means the little yellow lock appears in the lower part of your browser and nobody but the website you are connected to should be able to read the data you send.

Change passwords often

An easy way for you to protect your sensitive data and email is to change your passwords on a monthly basis, or even more often depending on how frequently you use computers away from home.

If you log on to your email at the library, in 'cyber cafes' or any other remote computer then the possibility exists that computer could have a key-stroking virus present.

This means everything you type into the computer (passwords, birthdays, social security numbers, credit cards) could be logged and used by someone else.

** Change your passwords at lease once a month.

Though not fool-proof, these security tips should help reduce your vulnerability and keep you safer online.

Mesothelioma Treatment Option: Why Is The Removal Of The Lung And Other Organs Necessary?

One of the most successful Mesothelioma treatment options involves the removal of the lung and other organs via surgery. However many patients and their loved ones do not quite understand why this is necessary.

This Mesothelioma treatment option is necessary and is one of the most successful because the disease usually starts in the lining of the inner chest wall and the lining that covers the diaphragm. This is called the parietal pleura. The disease then grows into the lining that covers the lung (visceral pleura).

Because it is impossible to separate the visceral pleura from the lung so as to remove the Mesothelioma cancer, there is no option but treatment through the removal of the lung. Secondly it is also important to note that Mesothelioma often attacks the lung tissue so the only way to completely remove the tumor is by removing the lung.

Quality of life for patients after this Mesothelioma treatment option is difficult to predict. Many people may suffer a degree of shortness of breath, which incidentally is also, one of the symptoms of the disease before surgery. Also because the surgery involves a large incision and sometimes portions of the rib are also taken out, many patients suffer a lot of pain after the surgery, however this is usually quickly controlled by pain medication.

However many times this Mesothelioma treatment option results in a big improvement, especially if surgeons are able to properly remove the tumor. In fact many patients are able to breath a lot better with one lung. The reason is because of the relief of tumor compression on the lung and the related restriction of chest wall movement.

List Building: Step Two

When you set out to start list building, step one is finding your niche. You need to have something that interests you to build your list around. If you only watch television, you have something in common with millions of people around the world. I hope you do more than that, but you see what I mean? Everybody has something that they do when they aren't working, sleeping, or eating. Right? Not too many people just sit in a chair and stare silently into space.

So, the second step, after you find your niche, is to build a squeeze page. First, you have to have some kind of budget. You're starting a business! Even if it's only $50 a month, like it was for me, that's a budget. So, decide what your budget is.

If you have more money than time, there are two things you can do. You can pay someone to make a squeeze page for you. It's pretty inexpensive, probably not more than $20. You really shouldn't pay more than that when you're just starting out. Or, you can join a program like Marketing Makeover Generator, and it will walk you through the whole process. All you have to do is come up with a bit of sales copy and you're set. That's an option, but it is a subscription service, so you'll need to have money for that.

But if you have more time than money, you'll need to learn to do this, and it's not that difficult. You can get the trial version of Dreamweaver. which is a WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) HTML editor. It's powerful. You can also download a free WYSIWYG HTML editor called N-Vu at http://www.nvu.com. Play with either of those software programs and learn a little about it. Once you get playing around, it's kind of fun. Dreamweaver has a whole tutorial for you to read. I suggest you do that. You'll learn how to use the program, and you'll learn some HTML. Front Page is another editor, and you might have that on your computer already. It doesn't matter what you use. Just start!

Once you're familiar with the program you're using, then start to think about what's going on the page. A simple graphic, like a picture of yourself, a great headline, some bullet points, and an opt-in box for list building is all you need.

It's probably best to keep a white background. When you go with blacks and purples, it's not very professional looking. Stick to basic neutral colors or light colors that make the text easy to read.

Your bullet points should show the viewer how he or she will benefit from signing up for your list. Here are some of mine for My First List.com:

  • How To Build Your First List In Less Than 90 Minutes
  • 3 Ways To Instantly Make Money From A List
  • How to Start Your First Website
Those are all reasons that people might want to sign up to get more information. That's what you need to do: Let them know why they should sign up. If you're selling wedding gowns, you might have bullet points like:

  • Unique Wedding Gowns, Only a Few Available of Each Style
  • Budget-Minded Wedding Gowns
  • Picture-Perfect Wedding Gowns
You get the idea. Brides want pretty, to have a dress no one else has worn, and for them to be reasonably priced. Right? If you could tell people how to find those, they would sign up for your list.

List building is an art and a science. You have to be reasonably creative, but it's not hard to do. Put something together that pleases you, and then, put it up and see if it works! If it doesn't work, try a different headline. Then, try different bullet points or different colors. Make your tests one at a time to see which change works, and then, keep doing it.

Just don't be shy about getting this started. Your squeeze page is your tool for getting opt-in subscribers. Just get one out there and let it start working for you!

Incentive Vacation Certificates As a Home Business

Incentive vacation certificates are increasing in popularity as business incentives, and can be the basis of a very profitable home business.

These certificates are offered free to people for a variety of purposes, and it does not take much imagination to consider the uses to which they can be put. The operative word here is free. Everybody likes something for free, and the offer of a freebie with an online purchase is frequently all that is needed to sway the prospect to make the purchase. If this works when the free gift is only another ebook, think of the response when it is a free vacation, free hotel rooms or even a flight.

Free gifts can also be used by offline sales companies to ensure that householders will be at home to answer the door when the salesman calls. This will usually be arranged by a prior phone call, when a free cruise to Mexico or the Bahamas is offered if the householder listens to the salespersons presentation, whether they place an order or not. This is usually enough to keep them at home and answer the door!

Business is beginning to understand what has been known online for many years. The power of free gifts. Gifts are not new in traditional businesses, but have not been used to their full potential as a full blooded sales tool. Considering there is evidence that a businesses sales can increase by more than 30% by using vacation certificates, however, it is puzzling that it has taken so long for companies to sit up and take notice.

However, they are taking notice now, both online and offline, and now is great time to use these certificates as the basis of a profitable online business. There is a wide variety of incentive certificates available, ranging from vacations, through flights and hotel rooms to such items as legal and dental discounts memberships, such as golf club membership, Auto discounts, meals and so on. You are not limited in any way to what certificates you can market.

Many businesses are looking for incentives to offer prospective clients and for a one time fee, or a low monthly fee, you can get unlimited printing rights for a variety of certificates that you can sell to businesses. You can have them personalized with your own company name, with artwork on the front and back. You simply advertise and take orders. You physically send them to other companies at any price you care to ask, since you have full rights.

You also get a commission for every one redeemed that is enough to pay for your printing licence fee in a very short time. If you dont want to outlay the money immediately, usually under $100, then you can purchase individual vacation vouchers at around $1 each. You can purchase a few and test the water with them before committing to a larger sum for unlimited printing rights. You could even purchase individual vouchers to offer on your own sales page, with a free voucher with every sale. They will then pay for themselves.

There are also usually affiliate programs, where you can sell the printing licenses on an affiliate basis. You get a commission on every certificate sold from your website. You cannot use the certificates yourself when sold on an affiliate basis, but you can earn enough to pay for your own printing license and then use them. Its a great way to get all your vacations for free. Just take a fortnight of two to three day breaks for free, one cruise after another and perhaps a couple of nights in a hotel in between.

There is no reason why not, since once you have the rights to print the certificates, you can just print them off for yourself and your family. Give them away as gifts to your friends. Sell individual certificates on your website if you want, or sell in bundles of thousands to large companies seeking a novel incentive campaign. There really is no limit what your imagination can come up with.

Incentive vacation certificates are great as a home business, and many people make a good living marketing them to both individuals and to large corporations. Keep in mind the generous commissions you get for every one used, and as an affiliate for every one printed and used by your customers.

Vacation certificates are becoming big business, and if you want further information check out http://www.vacationgetawayincentives.com where Lauren can provide you with more details.

Monaco Might Lose Its Status of Personal Income Tax Haven

That Monaco is crowded with celebrities is no piece of news. Since 1869, when the personal income tax policy became favorable, Monaco attracted very many individuals with high net income, such as movie stars, sporting stars etc. who became residents of the Principality in order to benefit from personal income tax exemption.

Take, for instance, Roger Moore, Shirley Bassey, Ringo Starr, Karen Mulder, Eva Herzigova, the race drivers Jacques Villeneuve, David Coulthard, Jenson Button.

But the number of celebrities is far outnumbered by the number of business people who enjoy the country's tax facilities: the retail tycoon Philip Green and the Barclay brothers are Monegasque residents.

Being a resident of Monaco implies proving you have a place to live and are rich enough to afford a very high standard way of life. And I mean really rich, as a place to live in the apartment blocks jammed into two square kilometres, either rented or bought, is extremely high.

Keeping residency implies proving you live in Monaco at least 6 months and a day per year. If you are rich, the advantage of being a Monaco resident is that, besides enjoying a sunny, pleasant climate, you can live at the same time in another country. The Principality is very close to main airports and is also easily reachable by sea, by car or by train. Thus, being a Monaco resident and working in another country is not only possible but it's easy especially speaking of UK citizens: laws in UK permit a maximum stay of 90 days (without counting the day of departure and that of arrival!) for non-residents. Many UK business people reside in Monaco and work in the UK without surpassing the 90 days limit so that they are subject to Monaco lawas for taxation.

Having attracted so many rich resulted in a conflict of interests: many countries disapprove of this taxation policy, looking at it as an evasion from taxes in their national area. And not entirely wrongly! In fact, Monaco has been "tax-cheating" a little by attracting capital from the high tax countries.

Looking at the issue from the perspective of the Principality, seems to me only right to try and succeed to evolve with the few means and resources a state so small has. Monaco developed from one of the poorest countries in the world (in the 1860s) into a state with one of the world's highest per capita income (around EUR22,000). And it was possible due to a strategic leadership of a resourceless country. It is after the territory was drastically reduced that this personal income tax policy came into being. Attracting foreign capital become one of the main targets for development. That's how the Casino became grand and famous and emphasis was put on tourism, being raised at luxury levels.

After the individual taxation regulations, in 1963 the Principality came with another financial artifice: no tax for local company profits or dividends. Thus the target was to enhance local business flourishing. This stipulation combined with an almost hermetic data privacy did nothing else than to increase even more foreign investments in Monaco.

So, from the point of view of big economic powers, Monaco should be punished, and so deserves any country daring to offer a better taxation alternative, putting at a disadvantage their high-tax based economy. The OECD has a project on "harmful tax practices" stipulating a set of punitive measures for the non-cooperating jurisdictions.

Invoking money laundering and international terrorism tracking, many OECD governments promote a policy of free information exchange that has as main purpose limiting the tax competition, beyond the intention to limit tax evasion and to combat serious crime.

Estimated negative results of OECD policy:

* Eliminating tax competition would result in uniformizing taxes to the amount dictated by some governments. Without the possibility of choosing a better alternative, there is no reason for governments to reduce taxes and make the tax system more efficient.

* This policy would change the present status of emigrants that pay taxes only to their new country and would promote the premise that the state still has a right to benefit from its former national labour. This sounds to me like a violation of fundamental human rights.

Although in 2004 still on the OECD black list of the tax policy non-cooperating jurisdictions, Monaco has changed its policy regarding the high confidentiality of financial data in the light of the expected, recent admission to the Council of Europe (Monaco joined the Europe Council on October 5, 2004 ). Modifications to legislation:

* October 2001: French citizens living in Monaco since 1989 must pay a wealth tax beginning with 2002.

* Information on French nationals are to be unconditionally provided to the Bank of France when required. Information may be passed on to the authorities of France or of a third country if necessary.

* 2004: Under EU's Savings Tax Directive, Monaco will impose a witholding tax on the returns on savings such as bank interests earned by EU citizens. The tax quantum will be the same as in Austria, Belgium and Luxembourg (initially 15%). 75% of such revenues will be handed over to the Member State of the respective EU resident. This will be applied beginning with 2005.

* December 2000: Monaco signs the United Nations Convention Against Transnational Organised Crime. The treaty stipulates that its members do not permit anonymous accounts requiring identification of customers. Banks must keep accurate records of accounts and report any suspicious transaction. Moreover, the domestic law enforcement officials are permitted inspection of accounts.

With all these measures, it seems that Monaco's attraction as a personal income tax haven will decrease. It remains to be seen how all these measures will affect Monaco financial and banking system after becoming operative.
