I Love Touring Italy - Trieste

If you are looking for a European tourist destination, consider the Friuli-Venezia Giuli region of northeastern Italy, bordering on Austria and Slovenia. For simplicitys sake we abbreviate the regions full name to Friuli. Depending on your interests, Friuli may be an ideal vacation spot. You can get classic Italian food and other specialties, and wash it down with fine local wine. While Friuli is not exactly undiscovered by tourists you usually wont be fighting crowds to see what you want. Like most regions of Italy, it has belonged to many nations over the years. Unlike most regions of Italy it remains multicultural, an exceptional mixture of Italian, Austrian, and Slavic influences. This article explores Trieste, Friulis capital. A companion article examines several other attractions in this beautiful region.

Trieste, population about two hundred thousand, is the largest city of the Friuli region. Like so many other cities in Italy, Trieste was originally settled thousands of years ago. Like so many other cities in Italy, Trieste went from one occupier to another changing rulers over the centuries. Unlike other cities in Italy, Trieste was definitely part and parcel of Mittleleuropa (Central Europe) as the major port of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. And unlike any other Italy city, Trieste only joined Italy in 1954 putting an end to the short-lived Free Territory of Trieste founded in 1947. The 1975 Treaty of Osimo dealt with the question of ethnic minorities and the border with Yugoslavia. Slovenia became independent in 1991 and in 1992 declared that it would recognize this treaty. One can well imagine that with such a unique history Trieste would be a unique place to visit. It is.

As soon as you get to Trieste youll notice its ubiquitous coffee houses. Some of them have been in business for hundreds of years. Among the best is the Antico Caff San Marco, as old world as you can get. See if you can wow the regulars; ask for a Bicerin, coffee served in a glass. As you hang around one of Triestes alternatives to Starbucks your thoughts might turn to Triestes most famous expatriate, James Joyce, who resided here from 1904 to 1915 and from 1919 to 1920. It was in Trieste that he finished Dubliners and A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man and began his masterpiece Ulysses. You might try to track down the 45 plaques on buildings associated with his life in Trieste.

As befits its internationality, Trieste is home to a variety of historic religious buildings representing many faiths. The Serbian-Orthodox church of the Holy Trinity and Saint Spyridion was built in the mid-Nineteenth Century and shows a strong Byzantine influence. Be sure to go inside to view its beautiful frescoes and icons. The Israelite Temple of Trieste was built slightly more than a century ago. Its exterior style is said to be late Roman of a type found in Fourth Century Syria. The building was closed in 1942 because of the Italian Fascist race laws but reopened after World War II. It is the largest synagogue in Italy.

The Trieste Cathedral is dedicated to its patron saint, San Guisto (Saint Justus), martyred at the beginning of the Fourth Century. It was initially built in the Sixth Century on Roman ruins. Shortly after it opened for worship a Lombard invasion destroyed the Cathedral. Then in the Ninth and Eleventh Centuries two basilicas were constructed on the ruins. In the Fourteenth Century these basilicas were joined and in a sense the Cathedral was rebuilt. Excavations during the 1930s revealed the remains of a Roman forum and other buildings. The Cathedral is adjacent to a castle of the same name. Walk on its ramparts for a great view of the city and its surroundings.

Other Trieste churches of interest include the Eleventh Century Roman-Gothic Basilica of San Silvestro constructed on the site of the oldest church in Trieste, the Seventeenth Century Church of Santa Maria Maggiore and the Chapel of Madonna della Salute (Madonna of Health) with a Seventeenth Century Sculpture that some believe to have saved Trieste from a cholera epidemic in 1849. This church is next door to the Protestant Church of Saint Sylvester.

Theres one great characteristic that Trieste shares with other Italian cities; demolitions can unearth hidden treasures. For example in 1938 during a routine excavation the Teatro Romano (Roman Amphitheater) poked its head out of the rubble so to speak. This amphitheater is nestled in the middle of the central business district, near the foot San Giusti hill and is very well preserved. Make sure to see the Arco di Riccardo (Arch of Richard), named for King Richard the Lionhearted. This Augustan gate built in the Roman walls approximately two thousand years ago is located in Triestes old town.

You cant have an international historic city such as Trieste without a fine collection of museums. Here are some of them. The Civico Museo di Storia ed Arte (City Museum of History and Art) contains antiquities from Egypt, Greece, and Italy including art and artifacts from the Roman Amphitheater. Check out the museums Orto Lapidario (Lapidary Gardens.) The Civico Museo Revoltella e Galleria dArte Moderna (Revoltella City Museum and Modern Art Gallery) started with the personal collection of Baron Revoltella, one of the guys who constructed the Suez Canal (not with his own hands). It focuses on Nineteenth and Twentieth Century Italian artists. For a change of pace visit the Museo del Mare (Museum of the Sea), one of the best such museums in the Mediterranean.

The Castle of Miramar, about four miles (seven kilometers) northwest of Trieste is quite recent, dating from the 1850s. It was built for the Austrian Archduke Maximilian and his Belgian wife Charlotte and includes beautiful extensive gardens and a greenhouse featuring tropical plants and butterflies. The chapel includes a cross constructed from Novara, the flagship on which Maximilian set sail to become Emperor of Mexico. In case youre not all that familiar with Mexican history, he got the job thanks to the French Emperor Napoleon III. It only lasted for three years and he finished his days in front of a firing squad. Thats what you get for leaving such a paradise.

Trieste is an international academic and research center. Among its institutions are the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), the International School for Advanced Studies also specializing in physics, the National Institute of Nuclear Physics, and the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology.

The Gratta Gigante (Giant Cave) about 9 miles (15 kilometers) north of Trieste is the biggest tourist cave in the world. Its main room is over 160 feet (100 meters) high, almost three times as long, and about 100 feet (65 meters) wide. Its big enough to contain Saint Peters Cathedral in Rome, the largest religious building in the world. The lighting of the caves stalactites and stalagmites is spectacular. Youll find a Speleological Museum at the entrance to the cave. There are an estimated 1500 caves in the Trieste area.

What about food? Trieste cuisine is surely one of the most international in all Italy. Its foreign influences include Hungary for meat and fish goulash, Austria for coffee and a wide variety of pastries, Yugoslavia for grilled meat, and Germany for wurst and sauerkraut. Lets not forget Italys influence and even that of the nearby Carso plateau, known for potato, bread and plum gnocchi (dumplings), pasticcio and crespelle (filled pasta envelopes), potato and spinach rolls. And the list goes on.

Lets suggest a sample menu, one of many. Start with Paparot (Spinach Soup). Then try Gulash Triestino (Goulash Triestino Style). For dessert indulge yourself with Gubana (Nut and Dried Fruit Roll.) Be sure to increase your dining pleasure by including local wines with your meal. Well conclude with a quick look at Friuli wine. Friuli ranks 14th among the 20 Italian regions for acres planted in wine grapes and 13th for total wine production. Approximately 48% of its wine production is red or ros (only a little ros), leaving 52% for white. The region produces 9 DOC wines. DOC stands for Denominazione di Origine Controllata, which may be translated as Denomination of Controlled Origin, presumably a high-quality wine and 1 DOCG white dessert wine, Ramandolo. The G in DOCG stands for Garantita, but there is in fact no guarantee that such wines are truly superior. Over 60% of Friuli wine carries the DOC or DOCG designation, this is the second highest percentage in all Italy.

Carso DOC is a red or white dry white wine from the small region between the Isonzo River and the city of Trieste on the Slovenian border. Carso is produced in a dozen styles, sometimes from international grape varieties and sometimes from local ones. Some parts of its growing area are subject to a vigorous winter, while others near the sea have a Mediterranean climate. Surprisingly enough these zones may be separated by only a few hundred meters. Look for the red Carso Terrano and the white Carso Malvasia.

Levi Reiss has authored or co-authored ten books on computers and the Internet, but to be honest, he would rather just drink fine Italian, French, or other wine, accompanied by the right foods. He teaches classes in computers at an Ontario French-language community college. International Travel Medical Insurance - Do I Need One?

First, let's define what an International Travel Medical Insurance is. International Travel Medical Insurance is a short-term medical insurance plan that provides among other things medical coverage associated with international traveling. It is sometimes known as Travel Medical Insurance for short.

Do not confuse Travel Medical Insurance with International Health Insurance which typically is an annual plan that provides more comprehensive medical coverage for people living abroad. This is sometimes known as the Expatriate Health Insurance or Global Health Insurance.

The following are some of the typical benefits found in International Travel Medical Insurance:

  • Reimbursement of eligible medical expenses,
  • Trip Interruption,
  • Lost checked luggage,
  • Emergency medical evacuation,
  • Emergency reunion,
  • Emergency dental,
  • Accidental death and dismemberment,
  • Return of remains.

More and more International Travel Medical Insurance plans are also providing the following additional benefits as their standards:

  • Terrorism coverage,
  • Hospital indemnity (or hospital daily cash),
  • Complications of pregnancy,
  • Acute onset of a pre-existing condition,
  • Natural disaster,
  • Travel assistance such as pre-trip health and safety advisories, emergency cash transfers, lost passport or travel document assistance, bail bond assistance, etc.

Some may even provide:

  • Incidental home country coverage for a short return to home country during coverage period,
  • End of trip home country coverage of say, an additional 30 days at an extra premium.

Just like all medical insurance plans, there are deductibles, coinsurance percentages and overall maximum limits associated with International Travel Medical Insurance. Different levels and combinations of these benefit features will give rise to different premium rates.

The detailed explanations of these benefit items are beyond the scope of this paper. For more information, readers are encouraged to refer to the link provided in the resource box.

Now back to the question of "Do I need an International Travel Medical Insurance?" Before we answer this rhetorical question, let's examine some of the real risks associated with international traveling. We are talking about risks of:

  • Not knowing where to go or who to turn to when you have a medical situation in a foreign country;
  • Exposing yourself and your loved ones to sub-standard medical care that may further exacerbate your pain and suffering and putting your life at risk;
  • Emergency medical situations that may require you to be evacuated to save your life;
  • Emergency situations that develop due to act of war, terrorism or natural disaster.

Unfortunately, the above calamities are real in the world that we all live in today. From the financial point of view, it is not wise and illogical for an individual to assume all these risks. Furthermore, some of these risks are far beyond financial and in the case of an emergency it could mean live or death.

In short, whether you travel for business or pleasure, international travel involves risk. You may arrive at your destination to find that your luggage with personal items has disappeared. A personal emergency may necessitate your early return to your Home Country. A medical emergency may require hospitalization or even air evacuation. In most cases, your existing insurance will not provide adequate protection for these and other risks. Without appropriate travel insurance, you may be exposed to significant financial risks.

Fortunately, with a quality International Travel Medical Insurance plan, the above risks can be mitigated cost effectively. For example, you can get U$1,000,000 International Travel Medical Insurance coverage at as low as $1.50 per day. This is probably less than the cost of a bottle of mineral water!

So, do you need an International Travel Medical Insurance to cover you and your loved ones? The answer is obviously!

Go see the world, but don't leave home without a good International Travel Medical Insurance!

From 'I Will' to 'I Do' in 8 Easy Steps

So, by now you have found your soulmate. The yin to your yang. The person who completes you. The person you want to spend the rest of your life with. Congratulations!

Now for the hard part. What do you do next? Everyone has good advice for you; where to shop for your gown, the best caterer, what photographer you must have, etc. The realization of planning your wedding, the biggest, most meaningful event you will ever host, is starting to hit.

Your head is spinning. Budget, DJ's, caterer's, oh my!

Do not distress, help is on it's way. There are not really a million details to tend to- just 999,000. Ok , maybe not that many. I have condensed your to-do list into the 8 most important steps in your planning. These are the big umbrellas over the more minute details.

The process is quite simple really, as long as you are organized and follow a plan.

This is the first step to planning the wedding of your dreams. Purchase a professionally made wedding planner. This organizer will be your planning companion. It must contain relevant, useful information and tools. Such as; budget planner, guest list planner, calendar, wedding countdown checklist, vendor interview questions, wedding day itinerary, etc.

The binder you choose should be lightweight and durable so that you can carry it with you while meeting with your vendors or shopping for your gown. Use this planner to document all aspects of your planning. From vendor appointments to transportation. Keep copies of your vendor contracts in your planner and have it with you on your wedding day in case of any vendor misunderstandings.

The second step is also quite easy. Sit down with your fianc and talk about your 'dream wedding'. Is it in your church? Is it a small gathering of important friends and family? Big band and lot's of dancing? A five tiered cake with fondant and sugar flowers? Is it Elegant? Or Casual? Is it on the beach in Hawaii? Whatever your vision, write it down. You will want to convey this to your wedding vendors during the interview process.

The third step. Determine a realistic budget for your wedding. Gather together the people who will be responsible for paying for your wedding. Describe your 'dream wedding' to them. Discuss the amount available and who will be paying for what. Remember, every bride has a budget. It will take a creative bride to have the wedding of her dreams on a realistic budget.

Number four. Complete your guest list. You may want to create an A list and a B list depending on your budget.

Step five. Interview and hire wedding vendors. By this point you will have received many recommendations from recently married friends. I suggest you interview these vendors first. Interview a minimum of three vendors per category. You want to find the perfect fit for your event. Discuss your budget and communicate your wedding vision. Do not hire a vendor on price alone. Hire a vendor whom you feel has your best interests at heart. Do not discount your vendors referral list. Call at least three.

Number six. At this point, you may want to consider hiring a professional wedding consultant. A wedding consultant will be able to determine which vendors will be best for your event and for your budget. Your consultant will save you time and money by doing all the legwork for you, bringing your wedding vision to life, and keeping you on budget.

Seven. Plan your honeymoon. Keep in mind the season and your vacation interests. Use a certified travel agent. Feel free to browse the web for honeymoon ideas and locals, but it is best to leave the details to a professional agent. Would you trust a plumber to do your heart surgery?

And finally, step number eight . Relax. Know that your dream wedding is being handled by industry professionals who have done this many, many times.

I wish you a lifetime of happiness together!

Cheers!

VOIP Service: Sign Up And Save

If you want to save money on your telephone service using the internet, you will need to sign up with a VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) service provider. They will sell you the necessary equipment and assign you a number, which is used like a regular phone number.

VOIP providers are useful and very cheap. Most providers offer VOIP connections free of charge. They make their money by charging for calls to the regular telephone network. Most providers allow you to call any phone number in the world for a moderately low fee. For modest monthly fees (about $8-$20), they offer unlimited calls to certain geographic areas. They also provide voicemail, call forwarding and conference calls, at no extra charge.

Vonage, BroadVoice, Diamond, iConnectHere, Lingo, mywebphone, Packet8, and VoicePulse are some of the major VOIP providers. Most of these companies are based in the United States; some also have offices in other countries.

VOIP equipment includes a broadband modem and an ATA (Analog Telephone Adapter) or IP phone. Both the ATA and IP phone connect directly to the modem, but the ATA allows you to use older analog phones. No matter which equipment you use, it has a unique number that identifies your current IP (Internet Protocol) address. If you're constantly on the move, your VOIP provider tracks your current IP address, which allows people to contact you no matter where you are.

Even if you're using your Internet phone from a single location, a VOIP provider is usually still necessary. The majority of residential Internet connections have 'dynamic' IP addresses, so every time you reconnect to the Internet, you have a different IP address.

The VOIP provider is also useful, because people can contact you by entering your user name, rather than your IP address.

When choosing a VOIP provider, keep in mind the protocol they use. SIP seems to be the emerging standard. It offers fairly easy connection routes between different VOIP providers. H.323 and IAX protocols are sometimes offered in addition to SIP. Skype, popular for PC-to-PC VOIP systems, uses a proprietary protocol, so it is not easy to connect to the Skype network from another VOIP provider.

It is a bit of work to research and set everything up, but the sooner you start, the quicker you will be able to look back and say, "Why did I wait so long?"

The Myth About Model Release Required

As an editorial photographer, in most cases you do not need a model release. Photographer's Market," almost every listing says, "Model release required." Can you submit photos without a release even if they say it is required? Would the photos still be considered for print? -William Schledd

:::::::::::

A: William, your question is very legitimate, and very familiar. The rule of thumb is that editorial usage (book and magazine illustration) does not require a model release; but advertising, promotion, endorsement usage always require a model release. It's understandable why there is confusion, when in spite of this, so many editorial photo editors in the Photographer's Market directory say that they need a model release.

First, it helps to understand it from the photo editor's point of view. (Photographer's Market is published by Writer's Digest, the same company that publishes my two books, "Sell and ReSell Your Photos," and "sellphotos.com.")

Any photo editor signing up to be listed in the Photographer's Market directory feels theyre well-advised to check 'yes' in the query square that asks, "Do you require model releases?" Why? There are two main reasons for this.

1.) Photo editors do not like to receive an avalanche of amateur photos. By checking the Photographer's Market 'model release' square with "Yes," they figure this can be a preventative measure for them. Their time is valuable.

It can eliminate much time-consuming and expensive work reviewing tons of scanned images and CD's and processing and returning inappropriate submissions from window-shopping amateurs. And the editors have a legitimate case. Most amateurs are not familiar with their First Amendment rights and the fact that model releases are NOT required for editorial use. Photo editors, by stating that they require a release, are in effect eliminating extra work. The pro stock photographers know what's what, concerning editorial usage. They ignore the reference to model releases and submit their photos, with or without model releases.

2.) Photo editors like their jobs. They choose to work with familiar and well-established stock photo professionals. But they're also always on the lookout for fresh new faces, with fresh material, from photographers who have educated themselves on what photo editors need and expect.

Photo editors who advertise in Photographer's Market can eliminate any legal hassle (imagined or otherwise) that might place their job in jeopardy, by checking the "Model Release" square to "cover" themselves.

Here's a secret, William. You'll find that photo editors at editorial markets will welcome any non-released photo that matches their current need (when they are going to use it for editorial purposes).

Since photo editors at most publishing houses rarely deal with advertising or other endorsement-type assignments, it's rare that they ever need a model release. If they do ask for a release, it's usually because they are working on a project of a particularly sensitive nature, such as drug abuse, mental retardation, sex education, etc. In those cases, it would be appropriate to ask for a model or property release.

You can test this "Model Release question" out by sending non-released images to a photo editor who declares in Photographer's Market that model releases are required. Of course, the photos must be top-quality images, and the content must match the photo editor's specific needs.

If a photo editor balks and does ask for model releases, even though it's for editorial usage-- indicates the editor is a newcomer or inexperienced. Cross him/her off your Market List. There are some photo editors, too, who are not aware of their First Amendment rights. However, there are more than enough professional photo editors whom you can deal with who are aware of their legal rights -- and have legal counsel to protect them (and you) if a model release question should ever come up.

Publishers fiercely protect their First Amendment rights. A policy of actually requiring model releases for publication could reduce the flow of quality photos coming into their publishing houses, which would greatly reduce their output, and might even put them out of business.

We deal with dozens of photo editors daily here at PhotoSource International, from small regional magazines to national book publishers. Rarely do they ever ask for a model release. If one does, it throws up a red flag to us as an indication that the photo editor is new to the field of publishing and might not know, not only their rights, but your rights as well. We avoid publishing photo requests from such an editor.

Learning your rights is one of the benefits of following the messages in the Kracker Barrel. I've met competent photographers who were unaware of their rights regards model releases and other legal issues, and consequently took years before they got squared away and took the step to begin publishing their photography. If you and others reading this message have, up to this point, because of confusion, essentially relinquished your First Amendment rights, I hope I've helped you to regain them. - Rohn Engh (Photographers Market, F & W Publicatations, 4700 E.
