Lets face it! Culinary arts programs come in a variety of forms. Each has its own features and benefits, and one may be best for you while the others may not. Well, it is through this variation and differences actually that finding the right culinary arts programs is a bit tough for many.

The culinary arts programs are in the first place designed for several good reasons. One of the most common is that they are designed, developed and introduced to the public to provide the people who share similar passion for cooking the technical knowledge and basic skills necessary for them to succeed in the culinary field. With this purpose, its no surprise then that most of the culinary arts programs available today cover even the hands-on laboratory training sessions to reinforce the students theoretical knowledge and prepare them for certain positions in the professional food service careers.

After the associate degrees, there are the bachelors degree culinary arts programs which are generally offered to be completed for four years of study. The ones who prefer these programs are those who want to learn more about the culinary field, from the fundamentals aspects to the most advanced ones. So what is covered by this type of culinary arts programs involve the basics of culinary arts, convention and meeting planning, culinary management, food and beverage operations, hotel management, and international hospitality management.

All of those culinary arts programs can be successfully attained by determining exactly which program best suit your needs. It is important also to consider the length of completion as there are some that may end in a short period of time, while others are long-term. The ones conducted for two to four years are basically the programs that include electives that can provide you a well-rounded culinary education. It is for this reason that many people prefer the long-term programs, than the short-term ones.

Is there anyway to nominate a person for sainthood? I'm serious. My husband deserves the title and it should be made official.

You see, this week he moved his mom from her apartment of 35 years. Under normal circumstances moving is very stressful. Moving a person who, even when she was young had the title of "difficult" and is now in her late 70's, is truly the testing grounds for the honor.

Not only is my mother-in-law difficult, she's also a "premiere packrat" and on a very fixed income. Thanks to the internet we found several "affordable senior housing" projects, checked them out and put her name on the lists. Finally, one became available-and at only twice the amount as her rent-controlled abode. Oh, and with half the space.

I never knew where my father-in-law actually put his things when he was alive. And I understood from the get-go why my sister-in-law and husband fled the place moments after removing their high school caps and gowns-NO ROOM!

My very patient spouse started preparing her for downsizing a year ago. He let her know what she'd be able to keep and what she had to giveaway (in one way or another). With every visit, he would go through and literally dump more of her "cherished" things. There has been (all on her part) yelling, crying, whining and many attempts at retrieving. Through it all her son remained gentle, firm and steady. I never heard him raise his voice once. This last week, the two of us did the last of the packing, he was there for the entire move and the next couple of days to help get her settled. Unfortunately, he also had to tell her half of what she brought had "to go".

She pleaded and said he couldn't tell her what she could keep. He asked quietly "Do you want to have a bed? Do you want to walk in here? Then you must get rid of what you don't use, period".

Thinking I would rescue her, she asked me how I could put up with her brute of a son? I replied "Oh, I'm much worse than he is, you're are the luckiest mother on the earth to have such a wonderful child. Now, let's get rid of your 4 muffin pans and the 2 boxes marked empty folders. While you're at it, let's get rid of the dozen rolls of contact paper."

In the 27 years I've known her she's never made muffins. Same holds true for the 5 cake pans, three 12 quart soup pots and the four sets of dishes. Trust me when I say, cooking is not a talent you associate with my mother-in-law. She's majored in using paper plates for at least the last decade.

Next was a phone call to my mother-hoping for another older woman's help. Too bad, didn't work. My mom told her to throw out these things and start her new life-clean and uncluttered. "What do you need with a half dozen sets of bed sheets for a cot you no longer have?" Then my mom did the cardinal sin, she added that most of what she was holding onto needed to be trashed years ago. That got a phone slamming, let me tell you!

On the plus side: The neighborhood is completely safe. The complex is fairly new. Many of the new tenants have already been knocking at her door and welcoming her. Best of all, there are planned activities and a market a half mile away. For the first time in her life, she has a dishwasher, air conditioning and a private patio. It will be up to her whether or not she makes the best of her new life. Another definite plus- my husband will no longer have to endure over two hour drives in traffic to visit her.

How my husband still has his sanity, low blood pressure and sense of humor is a miracle! Truly a testimony if not for sainthood, he should at least get a halo and wings.

* All boat keys need to have a key chain with a floating device on it. You really do not want to accidentally drop your keys, in water so deep, that you cannot see the bottom.

* Boat owner documents should be kept in a waterproof container/bag.

* When out in your boat and you see a storm coming, get off the lake as soon as possible.

* Learn a few knots so you can safely tie up your boat to the dock. You dont want to return the next morning and find it has drifted awayor smashed into rocks. Also make sure it is secure.

* Small children easily lose their balance when walking along the dock. Make sure someone is holding their hand as they get into the boat. Many a child has fallen off the dock between the dock and edge of the boat. (Including myself)

* Taking a bottle of sunscreen is always a great idea. With the additional sun rays reflecting off the water, it is easy to get over sun-tanned.

* If in a motorized boat, be considerate of the wildlife. When driving close to the shore, drive very slowly so as not to disturb any birds nests. In the past few years, so many loon nests have been destroyed by huge waves from boats.

* Dont throw your litter overboard off the boat into the water. Seagulls and ducks have been known to get their heads stuck in the cups or the rings that hold a few bottles together for easy carrying. Swimmers have also cut their feet a lot on broken glass from beer bottles and old rusty tin cans.

* Some people who travel in houseboats, like to lather up and then jump into the water to rinse off. What a fast way to get clean! But please use soap that is environmentally friendly.

* Check the levels of your gas tank before taking off and check the levels routinely while out in the boat. Not much fun running out of fuel on the farthest end of the lake and having to paddle all the way back home. Good exercise though! Just hope that you remembered to put in the paddles before you took off for that joy ride in your boat.

* You might think this is a ridiculous tip but it really is important to untie the boat from the dock, before you take off.

* Standing in the boat while it is moving can easily lead to falling out of the boat. All it takes is for the boat to hit a good wave and you might lose your balance and end up in the soup.

* When you are driving closer to a slower moving boat in an open body of water, slow down your speed so that it does not make the other boat rock about. Give them lots of space.

* At the beginning of the boating season, you are just itching to get your boat out there on the lake. Ramps which are used to put your boat in to the water are often hard to find. When you do find one, quite often it is on private property. Be considerate and ask the owner if you can use their ramp. The owner might be even more obliging if you offer to pay a fee for its use.

* Some lakes/waterways have areas where the water is too shallow to drive a boat through. Cut your engine drive slow through the designated area. Buoys will mark the way for you. Watch out for logs, branches and rocks in these shallower waters. They can do a lot of damage to the propeller of your motor and the bottom of your boat.

* You have had a great time out in your boat/craft and now it is time to dock. Please approach the dock/mooring slowly to decrease the noise level and to keep the wake small. There may be small children playing in the water and you do not want a big wave to knock them off their feet.

Prevention sounds like a lot of work. But it is far better than dealing with what could go wrong.
